Quarterly fire door inspections could be made compulsory as part of an upcoming Fire Safety Bill.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) alongside Housing secretary Robert Jenrick, is currently seeking advice in consultation with building owners to see if the proposals are feasible, with the aim of making it part of its wide ranging changes to fire safety laws.
It is hoped, the new legislative reforms will be brought into effect ‘very swiftly’ as part of a new Fire Safety Bill, introduced by the Queen’s Speech 2019 – 2020, to include all of the recommendations of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
Says Jamie Allam, Commercial Director Amthal Fire & Security: “In an industry where there is currently no specific legislation that requires fire doors to be checked, this is welcome news and will play a key part in increasing fire safety.
“We already work closely with Building owners and managers of multi-occupied residential premises, offering dedicated property management fire solutions. And with a legal requirement for regular checks on fire doors, residents can be further provided with peace of mind that their safety is valued as an utmost priority.”
Amthal is a member of the Fire Industry Association (FIA,) and accredited with BAFE Fire Safety Register as an industry-leading, trained Engineers on Fire Door safety testing. We are able to support building owners and managers achieve, and often exceed, the suggested recommendations for resident fire safety.
Amthal offers advice right from initial design through installation and maintenance of fire safety systems, including use and regular inspection of fire doors. Currently, it is assessed using a risk-based approach to testing, working closely in partnership with building owners to assess their contribution to a building’s overall fire safety.
